R21 highway at airport open following taxi blockade

There were again taxi blockages this morning on the R21 passing the airport, but already by 8am the route was clear to travel.

Both highways of the r21 and R24 have been reopened following the intervention of Ekurhuleni Metro Police and the police.

Several arrests have been made.

Airport Management at OR Tambo International Airport issued a statement this morning to alert passengers and travelers to the airport of road blockades on routes to the airport this morning.

“It has been brought to our attention by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department and the South African Police Service that the R21 and R24 are being blocked by protesting metered taxis  and truck drivers,” said Leigh Gunkel-Keuler, spokesperson, OR Tambo International Airport in a statement before 6am.

“We have been informed that it is the specific intention of the protesting drivers to block access to OR Tambo International Airport. At this stage the EMPD and South African Police Service are on high alert in and around the airport precinct.”

Passengers and travelers to the airport were advised at the time to proceed with caution as they made their way to the airport.

Major delays were expected.
