Trying to shed light on Boksburg’s missing street lights

In some areas of Ward 32, street light poles have been disappearing and if they don’t disappear altogether, they are cut off and left on the side of the road.

This has been found in Trichardts Road, Campbell Road and Railway Streets, according to Ward 32 Clr candidate Marius de Vos.

He believes criminals are selling the street light poles to scrapyards.

“The poles are metal, so we suspect this is what is happening. We believe the criminals are doing this at night, sometimes leaving the poles on the side of the road and fetching them later.

“This has been going on for months and nothing has been done to prevent it,” de Vos said.

He said this new criminal trend is disadvantaging the public who are entitled to street lights.

“The affected areas now have no lighting at night which is unsafe and criminals take advantage of this.”

The Advertiser has requested comment from Ekurhuleni metro on the issue.
