Sunward Park rider wins Spur National Mountain Bike Championships

Sunward Park’s Aaron Heyneke recently won the Spur National Mountain Bike Championships which culminated at Bekker School, in Magaliesburg.

“It was amazing but it was hard,” said the Jeppe High School for Boys rider.

“It all came down to who was the strongest rider. I had to practise and do what I had to do.”

Heyneke had also won the Inter-High Championships which featured schools from all over the country a day prior to the nationals.

The competition also featured schools from neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya and Zambia – taking the number of schools to over 50.

His inter-high victory was made more impressive by the fact that he wasn’t seeded for the race, meaning he had to begin at the back of the lot.

During his qualifying journey for the nationals, the 15-year-old finished in the top three of all four Gauteng qualifying rounds to book his spot for the big race.

The inter-high course was three laps of five kilometres and the nationals was two laps of 5 kms. – @SabeloBoksburg
