EMPD removes homeless from busy intersection

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) has taken action and has removed the homeless people who were sleeping and begging at the intersection of North Rand and Rondebult roads.

Officers last visited the location on October 7 to warn the vagrants against sleeping at this location.

According to the EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, the EMPD superintendent gave them a stern warning and suggested a place where they could be accommodated in the Boksburg area.

“However, they were not too keen to be housed there, citing ill-treatment,” said Kgasago.

“A second option, in Bredell (Kempton Park), was therefore suggested. They will be escorted to this place if they are found to be sleeping at the above-mentioned intersection again.”

This action by the EMPD follows a letter (Stad se hoofingang is ’n skande) from a tenant in the K90 Centre which the Advertiser published on page 12, in the September 22 edition. The writer complained about the state of affairs at the intersection: the homeless sleeping there and their rubbish lying everywhere.

The complainant argued this intersection is one of the main entrances to Boksburg and that this eyesore may instil misperceptions about the city.

According to Kgasago, the location is now monitored regularly to ensure that vagrants no longer sleep there.

“There have been no vagrants sleeping at the intersection since last week,” he said.
