Watch: Gauteng dominates in Jukskei tournament
Gauteng will be taking a strong team to the South African National Championships following a comprehensive showing at the Gauteng Junior Open Tournament at the Boksburg Jukskei Club, in Boksburg East, on October 14.
Six teams competed at the junior jukskei jamboree, split between four Gauteng district teams and two invitational sides, Limpopo and Northern Free State. The first four spots were taken by the Gauteng teams.
The tournament, which featured three age groups, was the last opportunity to fine-tune the players to ensure that selectors pick the best players for the SA Champs, which will take place in Kroonstad between December 9 and 15.
During the SA Champs, the four Gauteng district teams will play separately before a final Gauteng team is selected.
Quizzed on the success of the competition, Gauteng Jukskei president Danie Stoltz said: “It was a great success. The participants were of a high standard.
“This is an annual event and will always be held during the first weekend after the third-term school holidays. The event will be held in Gauteng for now and we’ll continue to invite other provinces.
“It was a great success because youngsters of different cultures and backgrounds competed and so we expect to see a good mixture of children of all races participating in the sport in future.
“We’ve started to take the sport to schools and we’re willing to help with training and everything that is required to get as many children involved as possible.”
