Community members help EMPD recover unlicensed firearms

Members of the EMPD Public Order Policing Unit also recovered two unlicensed firearms in two separate incidents and arrested one suspect.

According to Kgasago, the first firearm was recovered in Villa Liza on Wednesday afternoon, October 11, after a concerned citizen provided the EMPD Public Order Policing (POP) Unit members with information about an unlicensed firearm at Nguni hostel in Vosloorus.

Officers went to the address in question, but could not find the weapon. The police officers confronted two persons, who subsequently volunteered information about the firearm being somewhere in Villa Liza.

Officers rushed to the address in Villa Liza, where the firearm, loaded with 15 live rounds, was found. The suspect, a 35-year-old woman, was immediately arrested.

The suspect was detained at Dawn Park Police Station on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

She was scheduled to appear in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

POP members found the second unlicensed firearm in Vosloorus, but the suspect managed to escape.

As part of the Ses’fikile Operation, the members followed up on information received from the community members on Thursday, October 12, about a man who owns an unlicensed firearm.

“Around midday, the suspect was seen next to the cemetery in Vosloorus with a firearm in his hand. “When approached, the suspect showed the metro police a clean pair of heels and, in the process of the pursuit, dropped the gun at the cemetery and continued running. Unfortunately, the suspect disappeared into thin air and the police could not apprehend him,” said Kgasago.

Kgasago added that the recovered Glock 22 pistol was booked in at Vosloorus Police Station.

“The suspect is known and the police expect to make an arrest soon,” said Kgasago. -@FanieFLK
