Watch: Residents blockade road, blame MMC for Angelo protest

Disgruntled residents of Angelo informal settlement are blaming the Human Settlements MMC Lesiba Mpya for the recent protests in the area saying he is forcing his unwelcomed decisions on the community instead of listening to their views.

This came after the MMC met with the residents of the informal settlement to update them on the municipality’s plan to relocate them to Germiston.

The MMC told the crowd that despite considerable opposition to the relocation the municipality is going ahead with its plan, adding that the relocation is expected to start on October 5.

But residents did not receive this well. They frankly told the MMC that they were still against the move to Germiston, saying they would rather wait until the apparent project on their service stands in Comet is completed.

The MMC, however, insisted that the process is going ahead and this sparked a furious row with residents taking to the streets and blockading the stretch of Main Reef Road, between Pretoria and Filed Roads, causing inconveniences for Main Reef Road transit users.

They said the MMC is treating them unfairly, refusing to listen to their demands and mishandling the crisis.

On the other hand, Lesiba has somehow during the meeting blamed the resistance on a group of community leaders which he described as landlords who are misleading people because they have interest in the area. He said those people place major barriers in the way of development. -@FanieFLK
