Reiger Park community shocked by double murder

A morning brutal killing of a man and his daughter sent shock waves through the Reiger Park community on September 29.

According to the Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, a man known to the community allegedly gunned down his girlfriend (34) and her father (58) around 6.30am.

The boyfriend reportedly went to the girlfriend’s house, where she lived with her 13-year-old son, before the incident unfolded.

“According to information obtained, the boyfriend fatally shot the girlfriend in the head and walked out of the house. As he was exiting the yard, he found his girlfriend’s father sitting in his BMW next to the gate waiting for both his daughter and the grandson.

“Thereupon, the boyfriend opened fire on the father and the bullet went through the driver’s window and hit him in the forehead. The suspect then fled the scene.”

Both victims died on the scene. Police are investigating a double murder.

According to the killed woman’s sister, the boyfriend had a history of domestic violence and was abusive towards her sister during the days leading to the fatal attack on Friday. She added that her sister had even sought a domestic violence protection order against the boyfriend in attempt to keep him away from her.

“I feel very sad. I can’t describe how I feel. My father and my sister did nothing wrong, but they are taken away from us in such a senseless way.”

A group of neighbours who burst into tears when the bodies were being removed described the situation as shocking.

“I’m still reeling from the shock. I don’t know what to say because I have known this family for a long time – they are a quiet and good family,” said a neighbour.

The murdered daughter worked at a warehouse in Newtown. She leaves behind her 13-year-old son, who is in Grade Seven, and 20 siblings.

The suspect works for a local delivery company.
