Flying squad recovers illegal live ammunition in Ramaphosa

Members of the Gauteng Flying Squad arrested two Basotho men, found in possession of 12 live rounds of ammunition in Road Reserve, Ramaphosa, on Wednesday, September 13.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela, the officers were deployed to patrol the area, identified as one of the gun-related crime hotspots, when they spotted the suspicious men.

The suspects were clad in balaclavas, dirty clothes and rubber boots, on what was a hot day.

They searched the men and found them in possession of the unlicensed ammunition, which was then confiscated.

Police further searched the suspects’ shack but found nothing further.

The suspects, aged 30 and 34, will appear in court soon.

Phathela said they believe that the recovered weapons were used in the illegal mining turf war among BaSotho illegal miners.

This bust came a few weeks after members of the Reiger Park SAPS’s newly formed crime intelligence unit uncovered what they believe is an illegal gun trade in Ramaphosa.

Officers found a man, who hails from Lesotho, in possession of 10 live rounds, and it is believed that he supplies hit men, who belong to the rival gangs of illegal miners, with weapons used or intended to be used in murders and robberies, including home invasions and other violent crimes.

q Earlier on the same day, in Delmore Park, the same team had arrested two Lesotho nationals believed to be hit men.

Members of the unit, who were acting on information received from the public, spotted the two alleged hit men walking along a street in the township.

Officers approached them and discovered that they were in possession of an unlicensed loaded firearm. Their arrest led to the arrest of the third man suspected of being involved in a weapons-dealing network. -@FanieFLK
