Special event for foster mothers

Boksburg Child Welfare ended Women's Month with a special event for foster mothers at its offices in Vosloorus.

Organiser of the event Feerowza Mulligan who is also the community development worker, explained the function was aimed at motivating, supporting and empowering foster mothers to become more influential in their community.

“50 foster mothers were selected to attend and we focused on issues related to domestic violence and its impact on children who are raised in such circumstances.”

Nospiho Zembe, a social worker for Boksburg Child Welfare, did a presentation on the types of abuse women experience and how to identify the warning signs of being in an abusive relationship. The impact on the victims and secondary victims, which are mostly children, was also discussed. This was followed with an informative talk by Grammah Mlangeni – a social auxiliary worker – on how and where victims of abuse can get help.

“A consistent theme throughout the event was that the community needs to report abuse. In addition to this, we emphasised that women need to take care of themselves and treat themselves every once in a while,” Mulligan said.

The guests and staff enjoyed a brunch, entertainment, dance and music items.
