Metro struggle to tackle unstoppable electricity thieves in Reiger Park

The Ekurhuleni metro has admitted that its efforts to curb electricity theft in Reiger Park have failed to yield fruitful results.

Relentless electricity thieves continue to steal power despite authorities’ attempts to stop this crime.

According to the metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, the perpetrators are resourceful.

“We had two operations to remove all the illegal connections in Reiger Park the last of which was in June this year, in the areas of Joe Slovo, Ramaphosa and Reiger Park Flats

“We even moved the mini-substation across the road to the Reiger Park Clinic and Community Hall so as to stop the illegal connections.

“Thieves however, continue to steal our Arial Bundle Conductor to make new illegal connections. Almost all of Reiger Park’s street lights are dysfunctional due to the theft of ABC,” said Themba.

There are unconfirmed reports that an electricity theft syndicate is making a lot of money by illegally connecting shacks in the informal settlement and charging shack owners a connection fee.
