Long day for RDP housing applicants

Hundreds of people have been queuing outside the Boksburg Civic Centre for the past two days, to apply for RDP housing.

The Advertiser spoke to some of the applicants and they said they’ve applied many years ago but have never had any feedback from the metro, so they’ve come to apply again.

“We want houses,” said Germiston resident Yvonne Sentsho, who braved the cold weather with her nine-month-old baby on her back in the hope of getting to the front of the queue and getting her application in.

She said she spoke to a 50-year-old woman in the queue earlier in the morning (Thursday) who was in tears because she applied for a RDP house in 2010 and is still waiting.

The queue of people waiting to apply for RDP housing at the Boksburg Civic Centre snaked all the way through the parking area to the old town hall building’s parking area.

The residents said a notification from the metro had gone out on social media and this is how they heard about having to come to the Boksburg Civic Centre to apply.

“Council is not helping the people. We need houses. They haven’t kept their promises. It is going to be a very long day and we are very hungry now already,” said Ramaphosa resident Xoliswa du Toit.

Long wait: Xoliswa du Toit of Ramaphosa, Yvonne Sentsh, of Germiston, and Athini Mgavu of Ramaphosa, queue with hundreds of other Ekurhuleni residents to apply for RDP housing at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

The Advertiser has requested comment from the metro about the RDP housing application process which has taken place over the past two days.
