Forensic evidence links teenager to rape, murder of 10-year-old girl

The Reiger Park police rearrested a teenager (18), on Thursday, July 27, believed to have killed 10-year-old Chrisania Carelse of Ramaphosa.

The little girl’s naked body was found in the veld next to the ZCC Church, in Elsburg Road, on April 1, hours after she was abducted from her home.

She had been raped and sustained stab wounds to her neck and stomach.

Within three days of Chrisania’s body being found, a special investigative team of the Reiger Park Crime Intelligence Unit arrested the 18-year-old and charged him with the crimes.

He was, however, released and criminal charges were withdrawn due to a lack of evidence.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela said the police now have forensic evidence that positively links the same man to the crime.

The suspect was rearrested at a house in Driehoek, Germiston, and charged with kidnapping, rape and murder.

The accused made his first court appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, July 31, and he was remanded in custody.

“The initial withdrawal of the charges did nothing to diminish our members’ enthusiasm for tracking down the perpetrator. They vowed they would stop at nothing to bring the person responsible to book for this horrendous crime,” said Phathela.

The suspect is reportedly a friend of the family and knew the deceased very well. -@Fanie FLK
