Angelo patrollers equipped with new bicycles

A local business, Leloba Bright Trading, donated six new bicycles to members of the Angelo community patrollers.

The informal settlement is one of Boksburg’s highest crime areas where people are killed, robbed and sexually assaulted on a regular basis.

The company’s donation, aimed at supporting the informal settlement’s community patrol programme, was made on July 27 at the sports grounds.

A representative from Leloba Bright Trading, Munyaradzi Sengwe, said the company operates in the community, and as management, they find it important to do something that will enhance the patrollers’ mission to deter crime by providing proactive patrol and visibility in the area.

Leloba Bright Trading was appointed by the metro to provide and maintain chemical toilets in Angelo.

Boksburg SAPS’ Capt Gladys Raphulu and W/O Siza Dlamini were also present at the handover of the bicycles.

They appreciated the company’s kind gesture, adding that it is very important to support the community patrollers’ crime-fighting initiatives because the patrollers know what’s happening in the area and they are extra eyes for the police.

“We hope the donated bicycles will make a difference and make Angelo a better place to live. This is beneficial to the community and us, the police, as it enhances our efforts to deter potential criminal activities and to protect the community.

“I hope this will also encourage other local businesses to do the same,” said Raphulu.

The patrollers also expressed their gratitude during the handover, saying they are excited about patrolling on bicycles, as this offers them many benefits, including promoting health and fitness.

One of the patrollers, Thomas Sibuyi, said the donation is a great improvement on their old bicycles.

The team has received donations of bicycles in the past and they believe that the introduction of patrolling the neighbourhood on the mountain-bike style bicycles has had an impact on crime in the area.-@FanieFLK
