Alert: Residents in the dark about metro’s new bank account

The DA has lambasted the Ekurhuleni metro for failing to communicate to ratepayers that the bank account into which municipal accounts are paid has changed.

DA shadow MMC for Finance in Ekurhuleni, Clr Bruce Reid, said the tender for the Absa bank account into which residents paid their municipal accounts ended at the end of June.

Nedbank has since been awarded the tender and the new account opened at the beginning of July.

The new banking details for Boksburg residents are:

Bank: Nedbank

Branch: Nedbank Limited

Account number: 1119114896

Branch code: 198765

Swift code: NEDSZAJJ

Reference: Your municipal account number

“In typical ANC fashion, no information regarding this change was communicated to residents by the metro.

“The situation is totally unacceptable. Residents have received termination notices owing to non-payment, only to find out that their payments have not reflected due to the change of banks.

“It would appear that this might be the reason why the online platform, e-Siyakhoka Service, is presently suspended.”

Reid said he has attempted to contact the MMC for Finance in Ekurhuleni, Clr Doctor Xhakaza, and the City Manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, but with no success.

“We urge the metro to urgently and officially communicate to residents where they must pay their accounts to avoid having their electricity cut off.”

The Advertiser has requested comment from the Ekurhuleni metro.
