Reaching out to the needy on Mandela Day

July 18 marked International Mandela Day and the birthday of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

To celebrate the day, scores of individuals and local organisations spent their time carrying out a variety of charitable acts.

Standard Bank, the Birchwood Hotel, Germiston Library, Boksburg and Reiger Park SAPS, SABMiller, Bracken High School and Ekurhuleni South Department of Education were among the many organisations that heeded the call for all people to devote at least 67 minutes of their time to helping the needy, poor and vulnerable citizens of the world.

Staff members from the Birchwood Hotel, Standard Bank branches in Boksburg, Alberton, Brakpan, Springs and Benoni spent their time performing charity activities for the children of Tswelopele Pre-school and Crèche in Angelo informal settlement, on Mandela Day.

They were also joined by students from Bracken High School and representatives of the Ekurhuleni South Department of Education.

Gardening, cleaning, painting, renovation and repairing of the school as well as cooking lunch for the needy children and staff, were among the services rendered by the visitors at the pre-school. In addition to that, the team donated hampers containing toys, clothes, blankets among others.

The event also saw the visitors interacting directly with the little ones, and the performed good deeds put smiles on the children’s faces.

The owner of the school, Johanna Moloto, expressed her gratitude to all those who came to support the centre. She urged those involved and other organisations to remain in touch with the poor communities.

“This makes us feel that we are not forgotten, and I hope that they will continue to do this to other needy communities in the city,” said Moloto.

Likewise, members of the Boksburg SAPS and the Victim Support Centre set up a soup kitchen at the corner of Commissioner and Trichardts streets, where they dished out free soup and bread to hungry people passing by the area.

The team later visited Blue Sky informal settlement where they also provided the residents with delicious soup and bread.

To celebrate the birthday of the beloved anti-apartheid icon, the Germiston Library staff visited Geppetto-Kids in Delmore. The visitors arrived in a mobile library (a bus) and spent their time interacting with the children of the centre.

Activities during the event included a guided tour of the mobile library, a talk on the late former president and the services offered by the library. Singing and dancing also formed part of the celebration. The children also received free fruits during the events.

Doing their bit on Mandela Day, Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA), donated a new kitchen unit and 20 blankets to Geppetto-Kids in Delmore.
