Youngsters to foster chieftaincy in Windmill Park

Seven residents of Windmill Park have been chosen by the Zalisidinga African Traditional Council to help inform the community about the role of the chieftaincy in communities.

The election meeting recently took place at the Light on the Hills Ministries, in Windmill Park.

The council consists of traditional leaders who have the responsibility to help the community with their issues.

Outlining the role of the chieftaincy in communities, Chief Godfrey Fanie, from the council, said: “We help in solving domestic issues facing families, assist when people are forcefully removed from their houses, help to reduce crime and help create jobs.”

The council’s main aim is to bring people back to their cultures and revive the chieftaincy within communities.

They also aim to bring back ubuntu and peace in communities.

The Zalisidinga African Traditional Council works with the National Traditional Advisory Council in aligning their laws with the laws of government.

The Windmill Park residents who have been selected will serve under the Zalisidinga African Traditional Council, and the public will report their problems to them and they will attempt to solve them.

Chief Fanie said the group includes young people, as they saw it fit to include the youth in learning more about chieftaincy.

“We also want to keep these young people busy so they too can spread a positive message about being involved in beneficial programmes.

“We have also held workshops for the group in helping them understand chieftaincy and how to deal with certain issues,” Chief Fanie said.

Anna Vries, who is the founder of Light on the Hills, an organisation that deals with matters affecting young people in Windmill Park, said that they are overjoyed to be part of the council.

“Our organisation has joined hands with the council because we saw that our values and those of the council go hand in hand in uplifting the community.

“We will continue fighting substance abuse and crime in Windmill Park,” said Vries.

The selected group will be based at the Light on the Hills Ministries in Windmill Park.
