The roll-out in Boksburg took place between April 11 and May 17.
Madikana Thenga, acting head of department at waste management services, says the switch to wheelie bins is a result of environmental challenges, such as the accumulation of waste on open spaces, illegal dumping, burning of waste, clogging of drains and the breeding of insects, rats and other pests.
“To address the challenges successfully and resourcefully, the municipality sought to discontinue the use of plastic bags gradually and has begun the roll-out of the 240-litre bins in Ekurhuleni.
“The wheelie bins have a longer lifespan, provide enough storage space, are easy to clean and do not expose workers to sharp objects.
“They are also vermin and vector proof, impermeable to vermin and flies and pose far fewer environmental impacts than plastic bags.”
