Five-year-old girl knocked over and killed in Biddulph Street

A young girl (5) died last week after she was knocked over by a car while attempting to cross Biddulph Street in Witfield.

According to Wilfred Kgasago, chief superintendent and EMPD spokesperson , the accident took place on Wednesday around 4.30pm on Biddulph Street, with nearest corner being Pretoria Road.

“The driver in a silver Toyota Aygo claimed he was not even aware he had run over the little girl who succumbed to the injuries sustained on the scene,” said Kgasago.

“The driver was even surprised when people were screaming and waving to him to stop.

“Paramedics did their best in trying to save her life to no avail. Seemingly, the girl stays at the nearby Witfield Ridge block of flats.”

An eye witness to the event, Ricky Grove, said he noticed the little girl running from a nearby complex trying to cross the street, before she was hit by a car.

Grove said emergency services arrived at the scene in just a few minutes after they were called and found the girl suffering from serious injuries.

Paramedics reportedly administered CPR, but the girl was pronounced dead despite efforts to try and serve her life for almost an hour.

“I was watching and praying all the time while the paramedics were trying to resuscitate her. It is so sad to see such a young girl on the ground dying like this. I was very shocked,” said Grove.

Grove urges parents and local crèche teachers to get back to basics and teach children safe behaviour on the roads.

“I have in the past nearly knocked down two children in separate incidents outside a crèche on Wannenburg Steet – just a few metres from where the girl was killed,” he said

The Boksburg North SAPS have also confirmed the tragic incident adding that inquiries are ongoing.
