Thompson saluted at memorial service

A memorial service in honour of Susan Thompson (65), who died during a service delivery protest in Windmill Park, was held at the New Apostolic church in Reiger Park on June 7.

Family, friends and neighbours gathered to remember a woman described as God-fearing.

Thompson was described as a lovable person who loved her family and someone who had a passion for people.

Thompson’s longtime friend, Betty Kelly, said: “I have known my friend for a long time now, since she was living in Reiger Park before she moved to Windmill Park. We had a good relationship as we used to laugh together and I would give her advice as I was older than her.

“We went to the same church and she raised her two sons well in church.”

Kelly said she heard about her friend’s passing on Sunday, June 4, at church.

She said she was speechless as she couldn’t believe that her friend was no more.

Another friend, Katherine Esau, said they will miss their friend who, she said, was always smiling.

“Even though she moved to Windmill Park, whenever we saw her in town we would hug one another and reminisce about the old good times we spent together,” Esau said.

Stacia Domingues, who grew up in front of Thompson, said the communities of Windmill Park have lost a respectable person who treated every young person as her own child.

Thompson’s son, Mcduff Thompson, said: “I have lost a mother and a friend who was always by my side when I needed her.

“She was a courageous, faithful and a strict person who didn’t want nonsense in her house. If I did something wrong she didn’t care who was looking or where we were, she would just discipline me on the spot.

“She was a people’s person and we will always love her, as she made an impact not only to me but the community at large.”

Susan Thompson was laid to rest at the New Boksburg Cemetery on June 8.
