New organisation to tackle elderly’s issues

A first-of-its-kind organisation in Dawn Park, Tshepo ya Sechaba, has been launched to benefit the elderly people around Boksburg.

Tshepo ya Sechaba, which runs as an NPO, is a SeSotho term meaning “hope of the nation” and is founded by Cynthia Nhlapo.

The organisation is set to provide physical and emotional support to the elderly.

It aims to raise awareness in communities about the social ills facing the elderly and to restore joy, dignity and fulfillment to the lives of such citizens.

A total of 120 elderly people graced the launch which took place at the Dawn Park Family Church in Dawn Park, on April 22.

Some of the elderly people who attended the Tshepo ya Sechaba launch: Nkele Ntsele, Triphinah Msibi, Poppy Rabothata, Zodwa Shabangu and Miriam Mogale.

Thabiso Motsiela, social auxiliary worker, enlightened the elderly people about their rights.

“Older people should live in dignity and be able to live free from exploitation of physical or mental abuse. Elderly people have the right to participate in community organisations and be protected within their communities,” Motsiela said.

Motsiela encouraged the elderly to report any form of abuse to the police.

Carrol Sello from the Department of Social Development was the keynote speaker.c

“If anyone comes across abuse, please contact your nearest police station, and if you belong to an organisation, you should speak to the manager, who will be able to assist. Also speak to social workers about any problems you might be facing,” he said.

Other speakers also encouraged the elderly not to think about death, as it tends to limit their thinking and ability.

The elderly were also advised to regularly exercise in order to keep fit and live a healthy life.

Carrol Sello, from the Department of Social Development, commended the good work done by the organisation to deal with the issues affecting older people.

Tshepo ya Sechaba members were due to meet for the first time at the Dawn Park Family Church, on April 25.
