President Zuma to lead Hani’s wreath laying ceremony today

This year marks the 24th anniversary since the murder of freedom fighter, activist and General Secretary of the South African Communist Party, Chris Hani.

To pay tribute to the anti-apartheid struggle, the City of Ekurhuleni will pay respects through various programmes for the entire month.

Hani was assassinated on April 10, 1993 outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg. He spoke against socio-economic injustices and the perennial marginalization of the majority.

According to metro spokesperson Gugu Ndima, to pay tribute, the metro continues to deliver services providing decent housing, primary health care and working tirelessly to alleviate hunger.

“There three H’s (Hunger, Health, Housing), have always been Chris Hani’s primary issues,” said Ndima.

This Chris Hani celebrations starts with the wreath laying ceremony today, April 10 followed by a memorial lecture.

President Jacob Zuma will today lead the commemorative ceremony of wreath laying to honour Hani, at the Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg.

Subsequent to the wreath laying ceremony in the evening, Minister of Finance Malusi Gigaba will tonight deliver a memorial lecture narrating the life of Hani at the Boksburg Civic Centre.
