SPCA educates on how to deal with slithering menaces

The Boksburg SPCA has reached out to the community of Freedom Park informal settlement (Villa Liza) by raising awareness on how residents should react when they encounter snakes.

This comes after the Advertiser published a story about the unkempt grass in the settlement which has turned into a shelter for snakes.

SPCA inspector Tshepo Mokalapa spoke to some of the community members. He said snakes are not only found in informal settlements but also in suburban areas.

“Snakes are everywhere and there are variety of snakes which come in different colours and some are dangerous and some are not.

“Snakes normally strike only when they feel threatened. We need to be aware that snakes are much more scared of us than we are of them, so if you are near them try to move away from them calmly,” Makalapa said.

Makalapa said if anyone comes across a snake they should avoid chasing it into hiding.

He said residents should observe where the snake goes and then call the SPCA or someone who is qualified to handle a snake for help.

The inspector advised the community not to kill snakes because it may lead to the danger of snake bites.
