Circumstances around decomposed body deemed suicide

Detectives investigating the death of a woman, whose decomposed body was found in a Sunward Park house, say she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The body in an advanced state of decay was found in one of the bedrooms of the house in Sunward Park, on December 20, last year.

According to the Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Cebisa Maseko, police, paramedics and forensic pathologists were all called to the scene.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the body had been left undiscovered for at least several weeks.

According to Maseko, as part of the investigation into the death of the woman, forensic pathologists conducted the post-mortem on the body soon after it was discovered, and the forensic examination found that the woman died of a gunshot wound.

Further investigation revealed that she shot herself with her personal firearm, which was found next to her during the gruesome discovery.

Police have determined there are no suspicious circumstances in relation to the death.

Police said although the detective unit had completed its investigation, further investigations are being conducted to identify the body.

“Further tests are now being carried out by forensic experts to positively identify the body, and this will take a couple of months. One of woman’s teeth is being used to identify her,” explained Maseko.

Residents including an old family friend were left stunned by her death.

Maseko said detectives and forensic pathologists spared no effort in resolving the case.
