Firearms competency needs to be proved before issuing of licence

In terms of the provisions of firearms control legislation, it is a precondition that a potential firearm owner must first obtain a competency certificate, before he or she may apply for a firearm licence.

According to Capt Juanita Coetzer, Boksburg North SAPS, in terms of Section 6(2) of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000), no firearm licence may be issued to a person who is not in possession of the relevant competency certificate.

“Therefore, a potential firearm owner must first submit an application for a competency certificate,” said Coetzer.

“After receiving the competency certificate, he or she may submit an application for a firearm licence.

“If an applicant wishes to apply for both, a new competency certificate and a firearm licence, the designated firearms officer will only receive and capture the competency certificate application.

“Only after receiving the competency certificate, the applicant may hand in an application for a firearms licence.”
