Armed robbery suspect caught on video arrested

The 51-year-old alleged robber who was captured by CCTV cameras while robbing the Engen garage on Commissioner Street, Boksburg CBD, has been arrested.

On December 6, the man allegedly held up a cashier at gunpoint at the petrol station and helped himself to the money in the cash register before fleeing the scene in a white BMW.

A few weeks later, the police released surveillance footage showing the man they were looking for in connection with the robbery, and asked for the public’s assistance.

Following a tip-off from a member of the public, after the footage was published on the Advertiser and the Citizen websites, police managed to arrest the suspect at his Jansen Park home on Valentine’s Day, February 14.

He was taken into custody on Tuesday and later charged with business robbery.

The man is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The car and personal firearm the alleged robber used in the commission of a criminal offense were confiscated.

A police source claims that the suspect confessed to robbing the petrol station, citing going bankrupt as the main reason for his action.

Investigators are also working to determine whether the man can be linked to other similar cases reported in the city and surrounding areas.

The investigators in the case applauded this publication and the members of the community for their assistance in tracking down the wanted suspect.

They also warned would-be criminals that even if they think they can run and hide, no one can outrun the long arm of the law. -@FanieFLK
