Ward committee election rerun overturned

The local government has overturned its earlier decision to hold a rerun of the Ward 32 committee election, which was due to be held tonight (January 31) in Boksburg.

Ward 32 covers Parkrand, Parkdene, Farrar Park, Cinderella, Libradene, Boksburg South, Boksburg East, Boksburg CBD, Cason, Anderbolt and Plantation.

The Advertiser earlier reported that the election rerun was scheduled to take place at the Boksburg Civic Centre.

However, according to the ward councillor Marius de Vos, authorities have overturned a previous finding to rerun the elections.

It remains unclear as to why the decision was subsequently overturned.

The Advertiser is still awaiting detailed information from the legislature.

The election for ward 32 was previously held on January 10.

However, the ward councillor objected to the election results, arguing that the elections had been improperly handled by the presiding officers.

He lodged an objection with the municipality regarding the results of ward 32 on Thursday, January 12, and requested a re-run of the elections in that ward.

The result was then annulled due to apparent irregularities in the voting process.

The votes were broadly won by people who are reportedly affiliated to the ruling party’s Branch Executive Committee, knocking out apolitical and candidates affiliated to opposition parties.
