Local Girl Guides celebrates a good year

Girl Guides declared 2016 a great year as they had new members joining the organisation.

Girl Guides South Africa is an NPO that empowers girls and women to reach their fullest potential through a dynamic programme to become responsible citizens.

Girl Guides teaches young ladies important leadership, sustainability and humanity skills.

The first Boksburg Teddies hosts girls aged four to seven years while Brownies hosts young ladies aged seven to 10 years.

The fifth Boksburg Guides is for young ladies from ages 10 to 16 years, where they become Rangers.

The Girl Guides objective is to nurture young ladies to have core manners, values and morals to become good community leaders of the future.

Seen here with the girls from the Girl Guides is Amanda Payze and the firefighter who taught them about being a firefighter during a visit to the Leon Ferreira Fire Station in North Rand Road.

Over the festive season the First Boksburg Brownies and fifth Boksburg Guides assisted those in need within the community by providing well-needed clothing and blankets to families living in destitute areas in Boksburg.

During the year, Girl Guides also learnt about breast cancer and the importance of early detection in a Pink Drive initiative.

Mandy Payze from the Girl Guides said last year was a wonderful year as they had “Connect” badges, where the girls learnt to connect with themselves, friends, the community and the world.

“Many wonderful tasks were completed, including learning mindfulness and how to deal with anger situations. It was an incredible life skill to learn.

“The Dad and Daughter competition cook-off held in September had the girls preparing and lighting their own fires to cook a speciality meal. It was an exceptionally fun day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all especially, the dads,” Payze said.

Amy May takes part in the mindfulness skill activity.

Other activities included a visit to the Leon Ferreira Fire Station in North Rand Road, where the girls experienced what it’s like to be a firefighter.

Many guiding camps were held during the year.

The girls also hosted a Mad Hatters Tea Party, where they all cooked their own food and provided entertainment for their parents who attended their tea party.

The Germburg Ranger crew hosted a fantastic camp for the Gauteng East Region, which included a wonderful MasterChef cook-off, the making of shopping bags, which highlighted some incredible creativity, and a photography lesson.

“We would like to thank all the parents for their valuable contributions and for helping make 2016 a memorable year for their children.

“A special thanks to Caryn Vos who became our biscuits sales queen, and a big thank you to Sam Berriman for hosting a fundraiser and donating much-required funds, which has assisted us hugely in the maintenance of the Guide Hall in Southvale Road, Parkdene. Sam was awarded an Appreciation award from our Regional Commissioner, Sue Vorster,” Payze said.
