Fuel prices spike; further increases a real possibility

For those who have missed it, the price of petrol in South Africa has risen by 45 cents for November, while diesel has risen by 63 cents.

The increase in fuel prices kicked in at midnight, November 2 and will add extra pressure on cash-strapped consumers.

The price of 93 octane petrol will now cost motorists R12.79  per litre, while 95 octane will cost R13.05 per litre in Gauteng province.

Diesel now costs R11.35 per litre.

There is a general consensus the political campaign to get rid of finance minister Pravin Gordhan and the gradual increase in the oil price have all conspired resulting in a substantial increase in the price of fuel.

There is also fears that government will continue to resort to an increase in the fuel levy as a source of income, which will further increase the fuel price.

The decision by the NPA to serve a summons on the Finance Minister, which has backfired, has already had a negative impact on the economy.

Independent economist Dawie Roodt has predicted a further fuel price increase in December, which does not vote well for those wishing to go on holiday.

He also mentioned the current economic climate is being overshadowed by the possibility of the ratings agencies downgrading South Africa’s bonds to junk status.
