Attempt to double world record for pet food collected in a week

A group of seven animal lovers has conceived an exciting initiative, in an attempt to break the world record for the most pet food collected in one week.

The aim is to collect 30 tons of pet food which will be donated to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

The SPCA will distribute the pet food according to need among their different branches or animal shelters.

The aim of the challenge is to get donations for the SPCA, but also to create awareness around the society; what they stand for, what they do and what they need.

“We’re just a group of people running this initiative on behalf of the SPCA to assist them. They (the SPCA) are really dependent on the community to keep them up and running,” said Alex Visser, one of the group members.

Help this group set up a new Guinness World Record and break the current record of 15.5 tons, by bringing pet food to one of the drop-off points.

Boksburg SPCA, together with Centurion SPCA, Waltloo SPCA and Sandton SPCA are the main drop-off points, but several veterinary clinics are also participating.

The world record attempt will kick off on October 29 and run for one week, until November 5.

For this record attempt purposes, pet food needs to be approved by the Pet Food Industry (PFI) and must be in original packaging.

Cash donations are welcome and will be used to buy pet food. Monetary contributions can be made into the following bank account: 30Ton4SPCA, Absa Bank 632005, account number 4090289470.

“We can get 25kg of dog food at R257; thus, one ton equals forty times 25kg of dog food,” said Visser.

“Get all your friends and family involved and challenge your colleagues too.”

All donations will be collected from the various drop-off points and brought to one location, on November 5.

It will be weighed on calibrated and approved scales, according to Guinness World Record guidelines and rules; and then submitted with all other evidence, such as log books and independent witness statements.

“We would love to help and we would love your help,” Visser concluded.
