No permission to dump medical waste on plot

The Ekurhuleni Municipality conducted an investigation after receiving a complaint with regard to the illegal dumping of syringes at Plot 180 Eastend Road, Mapleton, on October 3.

On October 10, the Advertiser reported that a Toyota mini truck had dumped bags full of medical waste on the property.

According to a witness, Johan Stoop, the men who dumped the waste told him that they had permission to do so.

The EMM then conducted its investigation.

EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe confirmed that syringes, drip extension tubes and other plastic articles were found in the bags, while some were also scattered on the ground.

“The syringes and other articles do not appear to have been used at a health care facility, and there were no sharps,” he said.

“The tenants who reside on the property informed environmental health practitioners that the company that manufactures the medical devices sends reject products to the plot for sorting and later collects them for recycling.”

According to Gadebe, a notice was sent to the owner of the plot to clear all health care waste dumped and to dispose it in an approved manner.

“A picture of the truck that was allegedly being used to dump the products was received from the complainant and it was sent to the EMPD for details of the driver to be obtained, so that a fine can be issued,” he added.

“The tenants claim that they have an affidavit from the police station that allows them to dump those medical devices.

“Ekurhuleni’s Environmental Health directorate did not issue permission to dump.”
