Social activist elected to lead ward 17

Simon Lapping, of the DA, has been selected as the councillor for ward 17.

His ward stretches from the Kempton Park CBD, to Rhodesfield, Croydon and Cresslawn.

It also includes the industrial areas of Spartan, Isando and Jet Park, as well as OR Tambo International Airport, and carries on through to Impala Park, Witkoppie Ridge, Bardene and Bartlett.

Lapping hails from a customer service background.

He was originally trained as a chef and worked in some well-known fine dining establishments both in South Africa and Europe.

Currently he is studying towards his LLB qualification through Unisa.

Regarding his leadership qualities, he said he is a social activist and has been a vocal supporter of consumer rights.

“My ward covers quite a vast area, its challenges are varied.

“On the top of my list is dealing with infrastructure issues promptly and in a professional manner in my ward.

“I believe that all residents, irrespective of background or political persuasion, must be treated fairly, and that everybody deserves to receive the same level of service excellence.”

He said he has created WhatsApp groups for each suburb, recognising the unique challenges that each suburb faces.

He has also created a Facebook page – DA Ward 17 Ekurhuleni – which all residents are encouraged to join.

“The WhatsApp groups and the Facebook page are forums where issues in the ward can be discussed and where residents can interact with each other.”
