Attempted murder on the rise in Reiger Park

The latest crime stats report showed that contact crimes such as murder, sexual offences, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and aggravated robbery have decreased in the Reiger Park policing precinct.

It also indicated that overall crime figures are down from the previous year in the precinct.

However, of concern is attempted murder is up by 70.8 per cent. There were 41 cases reported compared to 24 the previous year.

Contact crimes dropped by 3.4 per cent and property crime is down by 13.3 per cent.

The murder rate is down 9.4 per cent– three cases less than the previous year. Sexual assault is down 11.1 per cent, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm decreased by 19 per cent, while aggravated robbery dropped by 9.4 per cent.

Other statistics indicate common assault increased by 11 per cent, while common robbery increased by 16.5 per cent.

The good news is that property crimes have also decreased by 13.3 per cent.

Burglary at residential area decreased by 10.3 per cent, burglary at non-residential area significantly decreased by 38.5 per cent, while theft from motor vehicle decreased by 21.3 per cent.

Carjacking decreased by 47.4 per cent, while both truck hijacking and shoplifting also decreased significantly..

Although the stats indicate that crimes detected as a result of police action decreased, the Reiger Park police made a dent in removing illegal weapons from the streets.

The total of seized illegal firearms increased by 50 per cent compared to the previous financial year.

Drug-related cases slightly decreased from the previous 693 cases to 636 cases reported this year.

There was also a decrease in various crimes including commercial crime, theft from motor vehicle and arson. -@FanieFLK
