Standing up against the ill treatment of the LGBTI community
Close to 600 members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBT) community around Ekurhuleni held a peaceful march in Vosloorus.
The march was organised by the Ekurhuleni Metro.
According to metro spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, the main aim of the march was to change the outlook of homophobic individuals and raise awareness about the existence and diversity of the LGBTI community.
Mally Simelane, mother of the late Eudy Simelane who played for the South African women’s national football team and an LGBT-rights activist, encouraged the acceptance of the LGBTI community.
“I urge parents and the community to accept and learn more about the LGBTI community. No form of violence, hate crime, rape or discrimination can make them straight.
“All we need to do is accept and love them as they are,” Simelane said.
