Woman dies after saving grandchild from house fire

A heroic woman burnt to death after rescuing her grandchild from a raging house fire.

The woman was at home with her family, including her grandchild, when the fire broke out during the early hours of Sunday, September 11, in Lily Street, Reiger Park.

According to the Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Mashudu Phathela, the family awoke to find flames engulfing their home.

The woman reportedly helped her grandchild exit the house through one of the windows to escape the flames, but she couldn’t save herself.

The flames engulfed her and she died instantly.

Officials are trying to determine what sparked the fire, and a probe into the death of the woman who died in the fire has been launched. -@FanieFLK
