Man critically injured in Barry Marais Road collision

A man in his 40s sustained critical injuries when a bakkie and a light motor vehicle collided on Barry Marais Road, this morning (August 17).

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said ER24 paramedics, along with another service, arrived on the scene at 6.40am and found the light motor vehicle in the left hand lane of the road, and a small bakkie at the side of the road.

Both vehicles had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision.

“When paramedics inspected the scene, they found a man in his 40s trapped inside the bakkie,” he added.

“Rescue services had to use the Jaws-of-Life to free the man, in a 20-minute operation.”

Once he had been freed, paramedics found that he had sustained numerous injuries, leaving him in a critical condition.

“Paramedics immediately began their treatment and initiated numerous advanced life support interventions to stabilise the patient’s vital signs,” Meiring added.

“The patient was then transported to Natalspruit Hospital for urgent attention.”

The driver and occupants of the light motor vehicle apparently fled the scene, according to witnesses.

Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
