Ekurhuleni to elect new mayor

Ekurhuleni Metro is set to elect a new mayor on Friday, August 19.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said Ekurhulenui is ready to convene its first council meeting on Friday, where it is expected to elect a mayor and speaker of the new council.

“The City Manager will preside over the commencement of council until the election of the speaker.

“Thereafter, newly elected speaker will preside over council and oversee the election of the executive mayor and the chief whip,” said Gadebe.

The meeting will take place at the Germiston Council Chambers at 10am.

Gadebe said Ekurhuleni wishes to express gratitude to residents and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for ensuring maximised participation in the recent local government elections.

He assured residents that the absence of a clear majority by any party in the city will not affect the provision of services.

No political party received outright majority in Ekurhuleni during the recent municipal elections. The ANC had 48 per cent of the vote, followed by the DA at 35 per cent and the EFF at 11 per cent.
