‘Home affairs says I’m dead but I’m alive’ – Boksburg resident

Boksburg resident Deidré Warren discovered that she has been declared dead, after visiting her bank recently.

A death certificate has also been issued in her name.

However, Deidré, of Reiger Park, is alive and well, and the latest developments have caused a big inconvenience in her life.

“The official at the bank did not want to tell me what was wrong, she just said I should go to home affairs, as there is a huge problem with my ID,” she said.

She went to home affairs and was shocked to learn that she has been listed as a dead person.

The death certificate states that Deidré died from natural causes, in Vosloorus, on July 8.

“This is sad, because I’m alive – it now means I can’t vote in the election, buy a house or even get married,” she said.

It appears Deidré is a victim of fraud, as someone has claimed from her insurance – she believes this was the reason she was rendered dead.

She upgraded her Hollard policy a few months ago.

“I then started receiving complimentary messages from Hollard regarding the upgrade, but, recently, I received one thanking me for my claim.

“I was shocked, because I never claimed anything,” said Deidré.

Hollard is investigating a case of fraud and could not reveal details to her.

Home Affairs asked her to provide them with documents, including an affidavit, a doctor’s letter and proof from her workplace, stating that she is still alive, so that she can be re-registered as a living person.

The problem, she says, is that she was informed that it could take years to sort out the situation, and she now has to constantly take time off work and spend money to prove to home affairs that she is alive.

The Advertiser approached the Department of Home Affairs, to find out if there anything they could do to enable Deidré to vote tomorrow, what steps she should take to ensure a speedy solution in this matter, to try to establish if it’s a fact that the matter will take years to solve and, if so, what exactly prolongs the process?

Home Affairs has not yet responded.
