Suspected robber dies from bullet wound in Boksburg

An attempted robbery ended in one suspect dying from a bullet wound earlier today (August 1).

About five men arrived at Reclamation Scrap, in Main Reef Road, Dunswart, in a white Colt, just after 8am, with the intention to stage a robbery.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Capt Juanita Coetzer said one of the robbers fired a shot at a security guard at the facility, hitting him in the leg.

“However, the guard still managed to draw his firearm and shoot at the robbers’ car,” said Coetzer.

The suspects then drove away.

The EMPD officer who chased their vehicle to the Boksburg CBD, believes the armed men were planning to rob a cash van that was due to deliver/collect money at the scrap metal business.

EMPD spokesman Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, who added that there a was a second car, a Toyota Quantum, involved, said the EMPD reacted after noticing the Colt driving recklessly on the road.

“The officer followed and managed to stop the car at the intersection of Leeupoort and Joubert streets, in Boksburg – he then noticed that the driver was a bit shaky, that the car was riddled with bullet holes and that the passenger was bleeding,” said Kgasago.

The driver said he was rushing the bleeding man to hospital, but the officer told him to wait for an ambulance and also called for back-up.

Soon after the arrival of back-up, the officers searched the car and found a reflector jacket, a firearm and police strobe lights.

The bleeding man was certified dead on the scene and the three men who were in the Colt fled the scene.

The driver has been arrested and the police have launched a search for more suspects.
