Israel self-defense trainer coming to the East Rand

Have you ever wondered what you would do if someone held a knife to your throat or a gun to your head, or how to escape a chokehold or a stranglehold?

Well, wonder no further as Israel-based krav maga master instructor Moshe Katz is coming to the East Rand to train students and interested members of the local public on July 27 and 28 at Jeugland Hoërskool in Kempton Park from 7pm.

Participants will be taught how to defend themselves against a series of handgun or knife hold-ups, knife attacks, blunt-object assaults and rape.

Katz travels around the globe teaching people krav maga techniques to defend themselves. Krav maga means close-quarter contact combat.

These techniques are easy to learn, apply and to remember in threatening situations.

Krav maga techniques are based on the body’s natural reflexes which are already established within each one of us. According to Katz, people shouldn’t have to train for years to be able to defend themselves.

Krav maga is based on the principle that self-defense should be intuitive, easy to learn and effective in a crisis. Complex manoeuvres are not helpful during a stressful attack.

Krav maga training is said to be “the perfect self-defense system for imperfect people”.

The origins of krav maga trace back to the 1930s when Jewish communities were persecuted in Eastern Europe.

Its philosophies of combat continued to be observed in the training of Israeli special forces when the country was formed in the 1940s, after World War II.

With the establishment of the state of Israel, krav maga was adopted as the official fighting style of the Israeli Defence Force and the Israeli police force.

Today it is taught all over the world to security forces due to its simplicity and effectiveness. It can even be seen in many Hollywood action movies such as The Bourne Identity, Transporter, and Taken, to list a few.

FH Havinga and Barko Engelbrecht instruct krav maga schools in Boksburg and Kempton Park on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
