Boksburg residents give back on Mandela Day

July 18 marks International Mandela Day, and the birthday of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

Each year scores of individuals and organisations spend at least 67 minutes of their time doing good deeds in their communities, in recognition of the anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela’s commitment to democracy.

To celebrate the day, which is annually observed annually across the globe, The Re-Imagine Reiger Park Initiative, in collaboration with Denel Aviation – Kempton Park, visited the Reiger Park Community Crisis Centre, where they engaged in different kinds of activities to benefit the vulnerable children of Reiger Park and staff at the centre.

Denel Aviation's Marco Lewis and Marc Hemmens were among the group given the task of braaing meat for the crowd.

As a special treat, staff members received gifts and lunch, and were offered free services, including a massage and, manicure, engaged in educational games and had the opportunity to listen to a motivational speaker.

Meanwhile, the children enjoyed a great performance by a local group called Hope Drama, received a free lunch and a jumping castle was made available for them to play on.

The group of children looked on in awe as Hope Drama's Nino Neels and Themba Bomela beat out some beautiful rhythms on the drums.

She organised an event for the youth of Reiger Park in her yard, where she gave a talk on substance abuse and teenage pregnancy, on Sunday, July 17.

Participants also received gifts, including biscuits and sanitary towels, during the event held to honour Madiba.
