According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, the metro spent only R34-m.
“The upgraded facility can now cater for an increased number of councillors, who will take office in 2016. The seating capacity was increased to 254 (which includes a few more seats for disabled councillors),” he said.
“An additional 17 closed offices were constructed, four soundproof translation booths erected, (meaning four languages can now be translated at the same time). The onus is now on your office to appoint translators and put them into use.
The ailing, old audio visual system was replaced, new furniture and electronic apparatus were also procured and a safe room and store room built. “Now the chamber complies with the s12 Notice proclaimed by the MEC regarding the additional number of councillors.
“There is also a new reception with security checkpoint and a new waiting area.
”These upgrades are as per plans signed off by the Chief Whip’s office.
“A second floor canteen has now been converted into a guest restaurant, the kitchen has been revamped and executive-style furniture has been procured. The purpose of this facility is to host dignitaries.”
Gadebe explained that the R130-m mentioned pertains to the upgrading of the Germiston power network.
* Boksburg power outages
Regarding the outages in Boksburg, the metro has implemented cable replacement projects from July 8 to replace recently frequent failing medium voltage underground cables.
The cables being replaced are feeding Knights, Jet Park, Anderbolt, Ravensklip, Ravenswood, Farrar Park, Boksburg North and surrounding areas.
The total distance of new medium voltage cables being replaced is 8km at a cost of approximately R10m.
