Woman in ICU after hit-and-run on Main Reef Road

A woman is thankful to be alive after she was struck by a car on Main Reef Road, near the traffic light on the corner of Field and Main Reef roads, on Saturday morning, June 25.

Four pedestrians horrifically killed in car crash

The Angelo informal settlement resident, whose name is known to the Advertiser, suffered severe head injuries after being struck by the car.

“Witness reports stated that the woman was trying to cross the road when a white Toyota Tazz knocked her down, and then sped off,” said Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sgt Cebisa Maseko.

Members of the community immediately called an ambulance, which arrived about 30 minutes later and took the injured woman to hospital.

While she was lying helplessly on the ground, desperate community members were also seen repeatedly running into the middle of the road to try to stop passing police patrol vans, asking the police to land a hand.

One police van stopped a few metres from the scene and the officers reportedly told the crowd that they could do nothing to help and drove away.

Residents hailed another passing police patrol van, which stopped and waited for the ambulance to arrive at the scene.

According to one community member, who introduced herself as a friend of the victim, the woman was admitted to the Tambo Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where she is expected to survive her injuries.

Police are hunting the hit-and-run driver.

A car recently crashed into five pedestrians, killing four of them, on this very spot.

Residents of the area claim that they have been pleading with authorities for the past couple of years to site a zebra crossing in the area of the accident, and in other areas closer to the informal settlement – but no one seems to care -@FanieFLK
