Thief caught and arrested after 20 years

Twenty years after the crime, police say they have on June 2 arrested a convicted car thief whom they believe also robbed a Nedbank branch on Van Dyk Road, Boksburg East.

The arrest of the 53-year-old Tembisan man came 20 years after he and his three accomplices allegedly robbed the bank of R37 000 on June 14, 1996.

He appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on the same day of the arrest for the aggravated bank robbery.

Boksburg police said the man was already serving time for theft of motor vehicle, when they started the process to bring him to the Boksburg Court, where he was on Tuesday arrested and formally charged for the robbery.

His accomplices are still on the run, but police are working round the clock to bring them to book for their crime.

The police started working on this case in 1996, but detectives were awaiting the results of fingerprints, which positively linked the 53-year-old man to the robbery.

Boksburg SAPS’ Capt Collin van Rooyen said his team always remain diligent on all cases, and it is their diligence that led to the arrest of the suspect in a case that is two decades old.

“We want criminals to know that they can’t run away from us – it may take time, but we will finally catch them,” said van Rooyen. -@FanieFLK
