Taking to the streets to stand against substance abuse, rape

The Reiger Park SAPS in conjunction with stakeholders marched in the streets of Reiger Park and Ramaphosa informal settlement raising awareness against crime, substance abuse and rape, on June 2.

Stakeholders included Reiger Park CPF, FAMSA, Gauteng Community Safety, EMPD, Reiger Park pastors and the Ekurhuleni Community Health and Social Services Department.

According to Const Lufuno Mudzuli, of the Reiger Park SAPS, they decided to host the march in the geographical area where most cases of substance abuse and rapes are reported.

“We targeted Reiger Park to spread messages to the residents to stop engaging in drugs, because drugs kill. It also leads people to engage in criminal activities, to maintain their habits,” he explained.

Mudzuli said it is disturbing that most rape cases observed are linked to alcohol abuse.

Sunny and Buttercup streets have especially been identified as being a hive of drug dealings.

The SAPS urged the community to report any dodgy dealing or any information relating to criminal activities.

During the proceedings, the Reiger Park SAPS, together with stakeholders, handed out crime awareness flyers to residents.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela emphasised that such a parade will be held annually in their missions to fight crime.

The Reiger Park SAPS also appealed to anyone who would like to be part of the CPF to call chairperson Francis Coetzee on 083 647 5336 or 079 694 6503.
