Harambe equips children with skills in computer literacy

Volunteers at the Harambe Community Development Centre spent the past school holidays giving free basic computer classes in Reiger Park, to a group of primary school learners.

According to Harambe Community Development Centre’s Clayton Jacobs, computer trainers spent two weeks helping the children, starting from as young as six years old, to learn or improve on their basic computer and mathematics skills, and to brush up on their English literacy skills.

Some of the children had never before held a mouse in their hands, but within minutes the programme had them clicking and typing away like little professionals, and it was difficult for the trainers to tear them away from the computer screens.

Due to the large number of children who pitched up for the training, the learners were split into groups, and each group spent at least 30 minutes a day on the programme at this out-of-school learning centre.

The goal is to expose all learners, from kindergarten to Grade Seven, to digital technology within the next few years.
