Community digs up road to stop speeding, clashes with police

A vehicle accident sparked violence between the Reiger Park SAPS and the community of Joe Slovo informal settlement, on March 6.

Residents hurled stones at police when officers tried to stop them from illegally digging up the road where an accident that killed two people and critically injured six others occurred on Saturday night (March 5).

Residents took it upon themselves to create traffic calming measures, to stop cars from speeding.

Angry residents said they are digging up the road because they are tired of accidents occurring in the area due to speeding.

“We have been begging the municipality for a long time now to erect speed humps to prevent accidents, but nothing has been done and this terrible accident occurred,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

“We are angry and that is why we have taken the matter into our own hands.”

Another resident said that the lives of their children are not safe because of speeding motorists.

Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela said they restored calm to the volatile situation, but the street was dug up further after the officers had left.

Commenting on Saturday’s car crash, he said a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving was opened.
