EMPD confiscates AR 223 rifle during shootout

The EMPD confiscated an AR 223 rifle during a shootout between suspected rival groups involved in illegal mining activities, at a Putfontein mine shaft, on February 29.

The incident occurred at around 4pm.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, a fierce shootout by the suspected rival groups attracted the Metro Police to the mine shaft.

“When the EMPD Tracing Unit was rushing in the direction of the gun shots, they sighted what seemed like a group of men shooting at each other,” said Kgasago.

“On realising that the police were approaching the scene, the suspects disappeared into a nearby mine shaft.”

Kgasago said one of the suspects dropped his AR 223 rifle with six live rounds, and its serial number was filed off.

No injuries were reported and the rifle was booked at the Benoni Police Station.
