EMPD nab 60 illegal immigrants in Boksburg

Due to the extensive mushrooming number of undocumented persons in and around Boksburg in recent months, this prompted Ekurhuleni Metro Police to blitz the Boksburg area with the objective of identifying and arresting all those who are in the country without proper documentation.

EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said the special operation, which was conducted on Tuesday, February 9, from 7am until 3pm, yielded sixty undocumented persons from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Malawi, Pakistan and Bangladesh aged between 18 and 45.

Five of the arrestees were females.

Kgasago said Metro police officers from four precincts collaborated with the Freeway Unit members during the crackdown.

In the process, seven unroadworthy taxis, a trailer and an LDV were stopped from using the public road until they obtain a roadworthy certificate, said Kgasago.

He said operations of this nature will be conducted periodically to sift out the illegal immigrants some of whom take advantage of their status to commit crimes and peddle drugs as they are not easy to trace.

The potential spectre of criminality spiking due to undocumented persons is great – hence the focus and concerted effort to eradicate the problem.

All the arrested suspects were due to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court.
