Donations needed to help fire victims of Deslon Court

The NG Kerk in Boksburg South is appealing for donations for one of the victims whose apartment was razed by fire on February 9.

About three families lost almost everything when the fire destroyed their belongings at Deslon Court in Cason Road.

Pastor Gys Loubser said that one of the persons affected, Stephen Broodyrk, is a member of his church.

“We need food and money or vouchers to buy clothing,” said Loubser

He explained that the reason they are making an appeal for only one family is because they have not been able to get in touch with other affected family and they don’t quite understand what their needs are.

Broodyrk told the Advertiser that there was no one at his apartment when the incident occurred.

“I was at work when I received a phone call and, sadly there was nothing that could be done to save anything.

“The fire spread into our apartment through the roof,” he said.

He described the incident as “terrible and a disaster”.

Those willing to help with donations can contact the NG Kerk offices on 011 917 9670.

Mike McGuinness, who lives in the last flat along the row that caught fire, extended his gratitude to the firefighters and the SPCA.

“Neither I nor my partner, Coenie Herbst, were home when the fire erupted and the flat sustained only water and smoke damage,” he said.

“However, someone told the firemen that there were cats inside and they broke through the door to rescue them.

”Unfortunately, one of the cats, Sweep, was affected by the smoke and was found dead on the bed, but they managed to save the other two, Merlin and Felix, with the help of Maggie Mudd and the SPCA.

“They rushed the cats downstairs, where the SPCA van was equipped with oxygen, which was administered to animals from the flats who had suffered smoke inhalation.

”This was a stunning effort on their part and we are very grateful.”
